Phoenix Community Church seeks to embody God's all encompassing love, as exemplified by Jesus, in the way we interact with each other, our neighbors, and all creation.
Phoenix continues to grow and reach out to people in the community. For some it provides a place to heal and move on, while others feel they have found a spiritual home and decide to become members and get involved with church ministry. We hope to provide you a nurturing environment that offers opportunities for spiritual growth, an invitation to belong to a caring community and a chance to use your gifts in ministry.
Phoenix has adopted a structure that allows people to fill the needs they feel called to. If someone envisions a mission and wants to contribute to the church community through that mission, they simply need to get approval from the Pastor or Church Moderator. However, some of the work of the church is done through committees. Committee work generally involves one two-hour meeting per month. Special projects may require an additional time commitment. Committee members are usually elected at the congregational meeting in November. However, volunteers to help with projects are always welcome.
Decisions about church policy and direction are made by members of the church at quarterly congregational meetings. Between congregational meetings, an elected steering committee handles church business. Anyone may join the church by affirming the Mission Statement and stating an intention to become a member during a membership service. Members may vote in congregational meetings and be elected to the steering committee. All other church activities, including committee work, are open to both members and those who have not chosen to join the church.
The Spiritual Life Committee assists the pastor in planning and leading worship. This committee serves as a forum for input and feedback about worship services from members of the congregation. This committee coordinates educational activities in the congregation. Such activities include the scheduling of programs on church-related topics of interest to the congregation. The committee also coordinates volunteers for the children's program and implements an educational curriculum.
The Pastor-Parish Committee fosters a healthy relationship between the pastor and the congregation. The committee encourages a relationship that is constructive, rewarding, and satisfying for everyone. The committee shall engage in personnel matters such as initiating the call to pastors, providing job descriptions, reviewing salaries and other benefit status, and providing yearly evaluations. The committee serves as a forum for input, counsel, discussion and feedback of issues which arise from the congregation and/or from the pastor.
The Steering Committee handles the business of the church. The other committees report to the Steering Committee, which in turn is responsible to the church community.
